Posted by acedude 6 years ago

Hi everyone! Today we released a miniscule update to Subnautica on Steam. This update stops Windows Defender from identifying Subnautica as malware. We promise Subnautica is an underwater adventure game, not malware, and now Windows Defender agrees!

We can all thank Jonas for a speedy weekend turnaround on this. He went above and beyond to prepare this update after discovering the issue on Friday.

Holly the Orca

Posted by acedude 6 years ago

Two months ago, Subnautica went on sale on Steam. A big chunk of the profits from that sale went to Whale & Dolphin Conservation (WDC). The end result? A $100,000 donation towards ocean conservation. Sweet!

WDC were so thrilled, they adopted Holly on our behalf. Holly is a 38 year old, 2.2 ton / 5,000lb Orca.ย Holly lives off the coast of British Columbia, as part of a pod designated ‘A5’. She has birthed five pups in her pod.ย You can get a glimpse of Holly and her orca buddies on the Orcalab livestream.

The funds raised through sales of Subnautica will go towards preserving Holly’s habitat, raising awareness about threats to her and her family’s survival, …

Will Subnautica support PSVR?

Posted by acedude 6 years ago

Subnautica is coming to PlayStation 4, woot! Will it support PS4 Virtual Reality (VR)? This is a tricky question. The short answer is: Probably not.

The long answer is: We haven’t made any decisions about PSVR. However, the performance challenges of stuffing Subnautica onto console are already daunting. In this context, ‘performance’ means how fast the game runs, or how many ‘Frames Per Second’ (FPS) we can achieve.

High frame rates are crucial for VR. We are already battling hard achieve stable, consistent FPS above 30 on consoles, and VR requires 60+. Perhaps in the future, once we have achieved strong performance on PS4, we could revisit the question. But for now, it’s safe to assume PSVR is …

Accelerating Subnautica Xbox Development

Posted by acedude 6 years ago

Subnautica has been in development on Xbox One for quite a while now. We’re painfully aware of how long you’ve been waiting for us to finish the game. We’ve struggled to deliver updates quickly.

Moving a game from PC to Xbox is a difficult process. Subnautica is a big, complex piece of software. Lots of nuanced interactions with the host hardware need to be unpicked and rebuilt. Performance is a huge challenge, as we are bound by the Xbox’s fixed computing resources.

We were not moving fast enough,ย so we decided to shake things up and bring in outside help. We’ve partnered with Panic Button to finish Subnautica on Xbox One. Panic Button know consoles inside out. They have lots …

Earth’s Oceans Need You

Posted by acedude 6 years ago

You saved the underwater world of planet 4546B. Here on Earth, our own oceans need your help. This weekend, we are joining forces with Valve and the ocean charity Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC). 15% of Unknown Worlds’ profits from the sales of Subnautica will go to WDC.

4546B is a world covered in water. Earth is not so different: 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered in water. Startlingly, that water contains around 90% of the Earth’s biomass. That means that there is far more life under the water than above it: Out of sight, and often out of mind.

Agricultural runoff, drag-net fishing, deforestation, plastic waste, even acidification via increased carbon-dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Earth’s oceans …
