A Huge Thank You to the Subnautica Community

Posted by Donya 5 years ago

In celebration of World Environment Day 2019, Subnautica went on sale as part of a Valve special event between June 5th and 8th. Unknown Worlds pledged to donate 15% of our profits from sales of the original Subnautica to the non-profit, the Ocean Cleanup.

Thanks to the efforts of the incredible and dedicated Subnautica community, we are pleased to announce that you were collectively able to raise $20,694.45 to donate to the Ocean Cleanups’ efforts to rid the world’s oceans of plastic.

We cannot express our gratitude enough for all of your help in making this donation possible. Just as you have all worked at eliminating the bacterium that threatened Planet 4546B, we are now able to make

Help Clean Our Planet’s Ocean

***This event has ended***

In celebration of World Environment Day on June 5th, Subnautica will go on sale alongside several other games as part of a Valve special event until June 8th. During this time, we volunteered to donate 15% of Unknown Worlds’ profits from the sales of the original Subnautica to the Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit foundation that aims to develop and apply technologies (directly as well as indirectly) to remove – on a large scale – plastic pollution from the oceans.

Not unlike the bacterium that threatened Planet 4546B, our planet is threatened by a mass accumulation of garbage in the ocean. Marine debris, out of which 80% is plastic, has been reported to have an impact

Subnautica Concept Art: Cave Thing

Subnautica

Subnautica will take you to diverse environments: From lava, to ice, to coral, and more. In these environments, you will encounter all sorts of creatures, big and small. The above image is Cave Thing, and is a piece of Subnautica concept art that tries to give form to several gameplay ideas.

Cave Thing is painted with a diver’s mask at the edges, hinting at Subnautica’s first person nature. On the right, a small vehicle of some kind if shining lights on to the evidently bemused creature. Small vehicles will be pilotable (or this one an un-manned drone, supporting the swimming player?), deploying from ‘mothership’ style larger vessels (See Exterior Sketch for more about this!).

Most importantly, this little encounter is …

Subnautica Concept Art: Interior Sketch

Posted by acedude 10 years ago

Over the past three weeks, we here at Unknown Worlds have released five pieces of concept art. Until today, each one was accompanied by a piece of ambient soundtrack created by Simon. We’ve come to the abrupt realisation that if we keep up at this pace, we will run out of soundtrack before we run out of concept art! So for two weeks, we are giving the Subnautica YouTube channel a break.

That doesn’t mean you allowed to stop visiting the Subnautica channel. Nothing makes Charlie happier than seeing that little ‘subscribers’ number tick upwards, so lets put a new year smile on his dial and subscribe!

The image you see above is called ‘Interior Sketch.’ It …

Subnautica Concept: Exterior Sketch

Subnautica

One week ago, we revealed that Unknown Worlds is working on a new game: Subnautica. We want to share Subnautica with you from its earliest moments, bringing you concept art, early design thinking, and more.

Today we are following up on the original three concepts with Exterior Sketch. This concept was only the second ever to be created for Subnautica, penned by Cory after he completed Interior Hallway (We’ll show you that one later!)

Exterior Sketch was the first attempt to give form to an idea that is central to Subnautica: That players would interact with substantial underwater vehicles. These submarines would enable exploration and discovery by providing protection, mobility, and utility below the ocean surface.

Since this …
